the daring night
I was thinking about Van Morrison's beautiful passionate song "Daring Night" earlier today. Is it just about love, "squeeze me, don't leave me," or is this love a metaphor for exulting in God?
In the daring night,
when all the stars are shining bright,
Squeeze me, don't leave me,
In the daring night.
Galactic swirl in the firmament tonight--
Oh with the Lord of the Dance,
With the Lord of the Dance,
In the daring night!
And so on. The words make little sense without the music, and I'm playing it in my head from memory. But, this is exactly the prayer of one longing for God, especially when standing out in the open in the starlit night: Come to me! Hold me! Dance with me! Catch me up with you in the heavens:
In the firmament we move,
we move and we live
And we have our being ...
This is Van's Song of Songs! So, alone in a dark chapel, I cry out, "Squeeze me, don't leave me; in the daring night." Alone, in the presence of the galactic swirl of love, I call out, sing, whisper, fall silent.
And don't let go, and don't let go.
Don't let go, don't let go in the daring night.
