love hitting the cosmic fan
Sometimes, just sometimes, I read something about God that really rings true.Today, this happened as I read a marvellous lecture called 'The Mission has a Church: An Invitation to the Dance' by Stephen Bevans. You can download the whole text here and I recommend it to anyone who wants to find out what God is like.
Here is a taster: God is a dance--a great conga line moving through the world, inviting everyone to join in.
God is 'a fellow-sufferer who understands.'
God is 'love hitting the cosmic fan.'
And Jesus is 'God's message of joy.' To illustrate this, Bevans refers to an art exhibition put on by his students called, "The Laughing Jesus". Here is one, showing Jesus and Peter ice skating. Peter falls and Jesus catches him. 'The image shows Jesus and Peter on a public ice skating rink with Peter slipping and being caught in Christ's arms. Both are in that high spirited state of hilarity that being slightly out of control on ice produces.'
